Spring in Phoenix means a change of weather and a change of wardrobe! Before you make the switch, think about how you will pack up your winter clothes. Otherwise you might be in for an unpleasant surprise when winter weather returns.

  • Keep your winter clothes fresh. Wash or dry clean all your clothes before storing them away. Invisible stains may appear and darken with time. Dirt and food are like a buffet to insects who can create holes as they dine and ruin your clothes.
  • Repair any damage like sagging hems, missing buttons and split seams. The last thing you want is to pull out a favorite coat and not be able to use it!
  • Pack clothes in breathable garment bags, large bins, or extra suitcases and travel bags. Do not use plastic bags as they trap moisture and limit air circulation. This leads to mold and mildew.
  • Avoid cardboard boxes and garbage bags as they don’t provide much protection and can allow unwanted guests in to nest.
  • Use natural moth repellents like lavender or cedar with woolens and store them in airtight containers.
  • Place a piece of white tissue paper between each piece of clothing. This helps avoid color transfer from one garment to another. Try to store like colors together.
  • Hang your suede, leather and delicate garments in clothing bags.
  • Fold cashmere sweaters in a separate container by themselves.
  • Store your clothes in a cool, well-ventilated, dark area to avoid fading and heat damage. Skip hot attics and garages.
  • Put baking soda or lavender oil in your shoes and boots. Then pack them with tissue paper so they keep their shape.
  • Roll scarves to save space and prevent stretching.

Wait! Before you pack everything away, keep out a stash of emergency clothes. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, you don’t want to be left with only sleeveless shirts and shorts. Keep a few of your favorite winter clothes handy. You might be very glad you did!
